Never climbed before

First visit

Walk in, pay for the day, and climb. There's no induction to sit through and nothing to book. If you'd rather someone showed you, Intro to Bouldering runs three times a week.

Mon to Fri, 6am to 10pm

How it goes

One

Sign in at the desk

A waiver, which takes two minutes on the tablet, and a day pass at $24. Under 18s need a parent or guardian to sign it with them.

Two

Get shoes

Rental shoes are $7. Take a size smaller than your street shoe and expect them to feel wrong, because they're supposed to.

Three

Start on the slab

Front left, the least steep wall in the building. Follow one colour of tape from the start holds to the top. That's a problem, and that's the whole game.

Four

Stop before you want to

Skin and tendons take longer to adapt than muscle does. An hour on your first day is plenty and your fingers will thank you on Wednesday.

What to bring

Clothes you can move in. That's it. Nothing technical, nothing branded.

Socks, if you'd rather not put bare feet in rental shoes. Most people would rather not.

A water bottle. There's a filler by the training room.

Short nails. Learned the hard way by everyone eventually.

Chalk is optional on day one. You won't be on anything where it matters yet.

Four rules

There are more on the wall by the door, but these are the ones that stop people getting hurt.

Don't walk under someone

The mats under a climber are their landing zone. Walk around, every time, including when you're sure they're fine.

Down-climb if you can

Jumping off the top forty times a session is how ankles go. Reverse a few moves and drop from lower.

Ropes need a check

Top-rope and lead are belay-certified only. Learn to Belay runs twice a week and takes ninety minutes. Auto-belays are open to anyone after a two-minute demo at the desk.

Ask anybody anything

Climbers are famously happy to tell you how to do a move. If nobody's around, the coach in the yellow shirt is the one who's paid to.
